Tire pressure gauge recomendation

Post by ccraig13 »

I had the pleasure of driving with this on the entire way home last night
Image
What was really strange was that it wouldn't allow me to reset the TPMS like it normally does, but I'll figure that out later.

Last year I almost destroyed my tires because my gauge was reading 10PSI too low! I used the basic pen gauge my dealer gave me last night after filling them back up at the local Hess station, but I want to make sure I have something that reads accurately.

So far I've found that Longacre and Moroso are recommended. Anyone else second that?

Gauge

Post by RealM3E30 »

Charles, interesting post, just this past Thunderbolt School my good friend Glen bought some scrubbed Koni Challenge tires, he was complaining the tires where sliding all over the place. He ran them yesterday after using my gauge to recheck the pressure, his gauge was just about four pounds off to high. After dropping the pressure to the correct lb's, they stuck like glue. BTW, I use the Longacre liquid filled gauge. R 8)

Thanks Bob! I remembered you had a nice one and was hoping you'd chime in.

Oddly enough I went to visit my college roommate today and he happened to be staying at someone's house that was 2 miles from Stable Energies! So I picked one up today! How's that for instant gratification :D

Glad you already got a good gauge and hope that you were able to fix your TPMS.

I am not as fancy as Bob so I am using the BMW mechanical gauge (http://www.shopbmwusa.com/ProductDetail ... ductId=337) and I am quite happy with it for now.

I will check at Summit Point how accurate it is though.

Gauges

Post by RealM3E30 »

For giggles, we can round up a few gauges, a tire, and see how many differant pressures we can come up with, I'm sure we can find two of the same Longacre gauges, mine included ??? R 8)

I was thinking "Vic's gauge has probably been professionally calibrated so I can use his as a reference!"

:)

More seriously, I was going to assume that Bob's fancy gauge is THE reference, and take it from there. I like his idea of rounding up a few different ones and comparing them though. Should be fun.

I like this idea too. This would make for a great newsletter article.

As for OP question, consistency is important. If a gauge is "off", as long as it is consistently off, you have a calibrated measure. fwiw, I use a pencil-type gauge that is consistently off.

I am not sure if I agree with this statement. You might have a repeatable measurement, but if the value is off when compared to a standard, then it is not calibrated.

Yeah I thought I read that just because a gauge reads 27PSI instead of 25PSI doesn't mean it'll read 32PSI at 30PSI.

You are right... But this is yet another parameter of a measurement: linearity across the range.

We are getting quite technical here, but having good measurements (I.e., precise, repeatable, calibrated, linear, ...) are not an easy task to ensure!
