What to do with a rough condition 2000 328i 5-speed

Post by kbsilver »

My very first BMW (use to look just like Larry's car) has come back home. I gave the car to my son 6 years ago but now that he has moved to NYC with no need for a car, gave it back to me. While it was over maintained when he got it, it's essentially had zero maintenance since except for fluid changes (that includes cleaning inside or outside). 215K miles, original clutch. But everything works, engine still silky smooth and with the M52 engine, doesn't burn any oil (leaking is another story). I can handle all the under hood and most of the suspension stuff it would currently require, restore the interior, and get the exterior in acceptable shape (except for the dents from a hail storm) IF I wanted to keep it. I did a prelim inspection and tugged, pried, squeezed and could not find anything wrong with the suspension other than front shocks.

If we had a 3 bay garage it would be easy just to keep for whatever, but it really will just be in the way. What would you do?

Update: With a good amount of elbow grease, car is looking much better (still has hail dents - something that could be handled by paintless dent repair). It seems to drive as good as it always did. Put on the code reader and there was nothing, completely clean. Still torn as to what to do.

Actually I had thought of LeMons, but with a lot of TLC, it's a better car than that. Even the A/C works! But if I cannot find someone who wants a diamond in the rough, you never know. (In which case I expect it to win - no penalties!).
