First BMW without a spare tire ...

Post by ajcaruso »

Hello all

Just picked up a 2014 435xi F32 and wondering if the Mobility Kit is
anything more than a compressor and a can of Fix-A-Flat?
Also saw some ads for a Mobility Kit specifically mention "not
for runflat tires" - ??

Thanks
Anthony

That exactly what BMW mobility kit is - fancy fix-a-flat goo with compressor.
It works well, unless the puncture hole is too big, or in a sidewall (too much flex).

BMW has gone this rout since late 90s (M-coupe may have been the first).
It used to be reserved for ///M cars, but evidently, they may be giving up on the terrible RFT tires in the rest of the lineup as well.

Personally, I still wish my cars had full sized spares.
My kids will probably never know what those were...

My father has been stranded overnight twice with run flats on his E90 so he eventually went to regular tires and bought a compact spare. The compressor and goop don't help when the local tire place can't get the right size tire for 24 or more hours and you have a few hundred miles to go.

He now carries a compact spare in his F80 as well.

Does this mean upcoming models will have at least provisions for a spare wheel/tire? Or will we get regular tires and a "mobility kit"?

Or maybe we will be expected simply to pull over and call our nearest dealer for assistance.....

Way back in the early 90s when One Lap of America was still a TSD rally, someone ran the whole event with a compact spare on their car to demonstrate the reliability of the little donuts. It might have been a Taurus SHO, maybe a C4 Corvette. The internet has failed me so far. I remember it was around the time someone rolled an E34 M5 during the event.

I'll take a compact spare over runflats or a compressor w/ snot any day.
