Need camera mount advice

Post by larryengel328 »

Santa Karin (with help from Matt and the elves at Unique Photo) got me a GoPro Hero camera for Christmas, and I need advice on the best mounting solution.

I'd like to put it in my E90 M3, and I'm thinking about running a bar between the headrests and using the bike mounting hardware that came with the camera to position it between the front seats. I'd also like to move it from car to car, and I want to be able to completely remove it. Is there anything commercially available that can be used, or do I have to fabricate it myself?

Larry,

For stock seats with adjustable headrests, I've had good luck with this item:

http://www.filmtools.com/cruisecam.html

you can make something for a bunch cheaper but for a prefab solution this isn't too bad...

Thanks Greg -it looks great. Is it long enough so that camera can be positioned between the driver and passenger and it doesn't interfere with someone sitting in the seat?

Larry,

Camera mounts will be a topic on the agenda for the winter meeting of the Driver School Committee. The one that is pictured does not appear suitable for a case where a passenger is sitting in that seat.

I have and use a cruisecam all the time. It looks ridiculously short in that picture. It's very easy to extend it so that the camera is essentially half way between the driver and passenger in my E46.

I'd be happy to show my setup to the committee.

while we are on the topic, what's the thought on externally mounted cameras?

I have also used my Flip HD with a cruisecam mount several times and it does not pose a risk for the instructor IMO.

Kish, I've been with numerous BMW clubs, Porsche clubs etc., the GoPro externally, suction cup, adhesive mt. etc. looks great. I personally have put mine on the front bumper. This camera is used by Pro Teams etc, I see no reason to not allow these, unless the "track" has a problem, it is their asphalt, they should make the decision whether to allow them or not. R 8)

I too have seen other clubs allow external mounted cams via suction or adhesive. maybe this is something that can be discussed at the next driver school committee meeting jeff?

Larry

Dave had your camera mounted on his #5.
It was on the front of the roof with a stable suction mount.

I say it was stable because I didn't see any camera
parts on the course when I was driving.
Regards, Walt.

Kish, we have been discussing the issue of externally mounted cameras for quite some time. We have a number of concerns about them. To our knowledge, none of these camera mounts have been impact tested.

If you and Bob would be good enough to email me separately the names of the clubs you know who allow them, Vic and I can then get some direct feedback on their experiences.

Camera's

Post by RealM3E30 »

Jeff, my question would be, not if our club allows them, but if the track we are renting does??? If the track pit out person lets it go, then it should be our policy. If a student/instructor does other day's with other clubs at the same track, and we are the club that says no, it doesn't make sense ??? As far as "impact" tested, I think we can make a very long list of items you will find that have seperated from the vehicle besides a camera. R 8)
