Hi Folks,
I'm seriously thinking about Monticello. This will be my first track event. The issue is, I just had my brakes pad and rotors installs with original BMW parts. Will this be an issues with Monticello? Will these pad have any heat issues?
I know after market pads like Pagid onr Mintex will probably be better on the track, how are these pad on the streets for everyday driving?
Thanks,
Dave |

This being your first track event, don't worry about them, they will stop your car just fine. Just come out and enjoy the experience, Montecello is not a hard brake track in my opinion after driving it. R |

yeah just make sure everything is is working order and you have plenty of pad material left (since you just serviced the brakes you're fine here). you definately want to make sure you're properly addicted to this track thing before you make the jump to changing pads at the track or putting up with the nosie and dust of a combo pad :p _________________ Greg

So addictive it's not even funny. One event and you're hooked. _________________ 04 E46 325cic

I have not driven Monticello nor have I tracked an E39 540. The following information is opinion. Your mileage may vary. No warranty expressed or implied. I am not a lawyer, professional mechanic, cardiologist, or rocket scientist. I did not stay at a chain hotel last night.
Anyway...
My rule of thumb recommendation for a first time school participant driving a BMW is to use factory pads from the parts counter at your local BMW dealer. Bring a spare set if possible. If your pads are more than half worn, install new factory pads a week before the event and bring the old pads as emergency spares to get the car home.
Even better would be a recommendation from someone with track experience in the same car at the same track.
Aftermarket "dust free" pads will be scary on track. They are designed to minimize dust generation which usually results in minimal stopping when hot. _________________ My Track Schedule

Sweet! I started tracking with my 2003 e39 540/6. I got Axxis Ult pads from Dave Z and flushed my brake fluid. I took the stock pads as spares but never needed them for a while.. You will have fun. That car handles really well for a 3500lb sport sedan. Once you get addicted, get an e30 and setup for track. The e39 is too heavy and consumables are too expensive for regular use once you get faster. Hope to see you at the track!

I agree you should bring a spare set of brake pads. It is much better to have them and not need them than the reverse situation. There will always be someone around to assist you with changing them.
Also, be sure your brake fluid is fresh. Although our official requirement is that the brake fluid be less than 6 months old, I recommend you come to your first event with newly replaced brake fluid.
