Need a new key

Post by ultimated »

Hi all, I just bought a 2002 530i that came with only one key. Morristown BMW wants $200 for a new key. Uncut keys are on Ebay for $50. Can any locksmith cut these keys, and if so, will they turn the alarm on and off? Or else, is there a cheaper dealer? thx.

While there are ways of saving a few bucks, in the end it probably is not worth the headache. If the $200 includes setting up the new key to work, PLUS disabling all the keys that are not in your possession, is worth it.

It's actually a very simply process to initiate the key for the E39: http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/sh ... st18384469.
I don't think that your standard hardware store could cut it but I'd imagine a locksmith could, just ask around.

Morristown BMW did it for $130, BMWCCA member price.

You should have asked for the dealer to throw in a extra key if one is missing for free before signing on the dotted line :P
