Old Service Records? Can they be retrieved?

So.. I picked up an '01 M5 a couple weeks back after nearly 5 years without an ///M

The previous owner told me that some substantial work had been done on it at a dealership before he originally bought it but couldn't provide the receipts. (Vanos work, rod bearing etc). Is there a way to pull this data and general work that was completed on the car? I have records for the past 15k miles but no idea before hand. Ideally I don't want to start replacing things that have had work done already or would like to know if he was exaggerating on what was completed.

I've searched multiple forums and some say records can only be pulled by the dealer that did the work, some people say any dealer can pull all records and some say it can't be done. Anyone know what the actual deal is? And if it can be done, what's the best way to get these previous records?

my good friend works at a local dealer and for multiple cars I have bought/looked at it's always the same result according to him:

any dealer can pull service history under warranty
actual dealer (maybe dealer groups share?) can pull service history of anything performed after warranty and at that dealer

Have him call the dealer where the services were done. Customer pay is not shared or stored by BMW, so I would have no access to it. - Tim

Tim, that varies by dealer. The ZHP I have now was serviced a lot at a local dealer (I won't say who), according to Carfax. I called them and asked for the service records and they flat out refused to reveal any specifics. I even asked if they'd remove pricing and owner details, and the answer was still no.

That is true... BUT the previous owner can retrieve his records. The original post said "I bought an M5....... The previous owner stated that some substantial work had been done on it at a dealership before he originally bought it but couldn't provide the receipts". That is the guy that can call for the records. We are allowed to release to the person that owned those records to begin with. Hope this helps - Tim
