How cold can track tires (R comps) get?

There always seems to be a lot of these going around.

How cold can track tires (R comps) get?

Post by gfield »

I am attending a track event this weekend. I am bringing track tires. I have heard that specifically R compound rubber is not supposed to get frozen or go below freezing because of the material. Who knows about this? Is it better to just run PS2's or something else instead? What are other people's experience with storage of R compound tires in the winter? I always keep my track tires inside during the winter, but I do know if I go to the track tomorrow it will be below freezing tomorrow night while the car and tires are sitting outside at the track...

It's fine. Run the R comps.

My concern deals more with leaving the track tires out overnight on the car and having them freeze in 20 degree temps.

It's repeated or prolonged exposure to freezing temps that damage the tires. Plus, it won't even get below freezing in Millville this weekend. :)

...I really think that these tires will shatter like crystal when they are driven so cold!
