Mt Washington Auto Race

Post by spunout »

Not quite a CLUB race, but interesting story of record set Sept 8 in a Subaru. Eight miles, 5000' vertical.

I've driven up that road. It is an amazing test of driver's skill. I hope the race will take place every year from now on. RallyCar racing seems to be on the rise here in the US.

I took the cog railway up and down, don't remember how long it took. If you ever travel on that, watch out for the coal soot from the locomotive.

That's pretty impressive considering there is a bicycle TT up that mountain every year that brings out national caliber riders and that record is 49 minutes and change.

Very interesting, Was just there last week on a (rainy) vacation. Had every intention of doing the auto road but the weather (at least the weathermen) did not cooperate.

At the end of the day it was suppose to rain, on the top of the mountain it was 120 miles visibility, 40 degrees, and 2 MPH wind. We were too far away to make it before dark.

On the day it was suppose to NOT rain, visibility was a few feet, wind chill was 7, with 70-100MPH winds.

I also did the cog railroad years ago. Think it takes 90 minutes each way and yes, we were covered in soot by the end of the trip. Just to let you know they now run bio diesel fueled engines. The do run the coal engine once a day for those who want the nostalgic sooty ride :D
