OK, first of all, I have not had a chance to change my trans fluid since my posting in Sept as there are never enough hours in the day.
I have noticed over the past couple of months that it sometimes hard to shift into 1st gear at a dead stop. If I go into 2nd gear first or try going into 1st while rolling, there is no issue. I have seen some posts on other sites that my symptom could be cause by bad shift pins. I wonder if this is the case as my car has about 44K miles. Could changing the MT fluid help or should I plan on pulling the trans and replacing the pins?

I had identical symptoms on my 2000 M Roadster last year.
Had this diagnosed and reapired by Mr M Car.
There was a bearing that needed to be replaced, a simple part swap but substantial time was required to remove and re-install the transmission.
While the work was being done the pins you are referring to were also taken care of and while everything was apart a new clutch was installed.
The transmission now works properly and all symptons are gone.
