2002 M Coupe radio code

Post by mcahn »

My son has a new (to him) 2002 M Coupe. When he bought it the radio was displaying "Code Wait". The seller did not have the code. My son pulled the radio, gave Princeton BMW the serial number, and they gave him a code that does not work. They told us to bring the car in, but when we got there they said there was nothing else they could do.

The service advisor said to leave the key in position 1 for an hour and then try the code again. This also did not work. Some forum says to leave the radio unplugged for a day, and then try the code.

Do either the "leave the radio powered for an hour" or "leave the radio unpowered for a day" suggestions make sense? Is there something else we do do (apart from Princeton BMW's suggestion of buying another radio?)

Any advice appreciated.

Leave the radio power on for one hour to reset the code sequence. There are also different codes depending on the brand of radio in the car. The dealer should have given you 2 or more codes to try. I think it will be a 5 digit code (4 digits for Euro radios).

BTW, let me know if you ever think of selling it.

Thanks Mark, we'll call the dealer again. Probably another dealer.

I had a similar problem with my '91 iX a couple of months ago after the battery died - it killed the radio code.

I was frustrated not being able to set the code. After re-reading it carefully, I discovered that the radio had to be left in the "on" position for at least an hour before trying to reset the code or touch any of the buttons. It worked after leaving it on for a while. This was over several short trips - the car was turned on and off several times, but the radio was left undisturbed.

Thanks Larry, we'll mess with it some more -- maybe the first code will work after all.

Matthew,
If you still have trouble ,PM me your serial number . some radios require the serial number to be altered 1 character in order to obtain the correct code. let me know if I can help you
