E92 M3 Grinding Noise from differential during cornering

Post by goroundel »

:?: :?: :?:

My 2008 E93 M3 rear differential fluid was changed with Genuine BMW Differential Gear Oil SAF-XJ+FM (part # 83 22 2 282 583). After driving about 700 miles, rear diff started to make noise when turning right in tight corners (no noise during left turns or going straight). P.S. Car has about 41K miles. Car never sees track or beaten up.

Any feedback or suggestions will be much appreciated.

Apparently there's a Technical Information Service Bulletin SI B33 01 02 dated January 2009 put out by BMW NA regarding the issue: Grinding Noise from the differential during tight cornering.

If the right type and quantity of oil was used, the diff may require a little more friction modifier in the oil. Buy a bottle of your favorite flavor (GM, Red Line) and add it to the diff. If the noise goes away you are done.

Drain oil and refill with Red Line 75w110.

That should fix it.
