Valve cover and oil filter housing gasket leaks on 325i

Post by jaydeepb »

Fixed the model

The 2009 329xi has been diagnosed with valve cover and oil filter housing gasket leaks. Does that need to be fixed? Also, any good independent shops to get it fixed? The car is out of warranty and the dealer in Pittburgh quoted $1000 for the repair.

Valve cover gasket replacement is probably the easiest job you can ever DIY. If you've ever done an oil change, you can do it, and it will take less time than draining oil. Good torque wrench is highly advisable. Expect ~30 minutes of work for the first time around, and $45 in parts for a new gasket.

Oil filter housing gasket swap will be messier, and will take longer (2-3 hours). You can google for DIY instructions.

$1K seams like a someone is late on that boat payment ...

sorry to stretch this out, but is it a 2009 328 or 335? there's no 325 in that year.guess it's easier if it was your car.

Either N52k or N54 will take a few hours done correctly . If not done carefully can end up in pinched gaskets or even cracked valve covers.

Rayadam, its my fault. I should know the proper model. Ok, so the model is a 2009 328xi.

Both of the repairs for that car can run just south of $1000,not completely abnormal in pricing.certainly a 2.5-3.5hr job for a tech that has done them(valve cover) and the filter housing is whole another story.

So Ray would you recommend getting it done at a dealer or are there any good independent shops that do this? Also is it a difficult repair?

$1k seems like a lot for ~$50 in parts. Like everyone has been saying, the valve cover gasket is an easy job. I have heard the oil filter housing gasket job isn't that difficult either...but any indy shop should be able to do the job with ease.
