Newbie here. I see the various codes (E21, E30, etc.) Where can I find what they mean?

Just bought 2007 328xi, sport, premium, cold weather, 18" alloys, 6-speed manual. Sparkling Graphite over grey leather with burl interior.
Loving it! Looking forward to learning more about it and its myriad technical features.

If you have a two door = E92
If you have a four door = E90

There is a complete list of commonly used "E" designations for BMW models listed in the back of the ROUNDEL publication mailed to club members monthly.

This list now includes the "F" designation in use too.

Thanks! I forgot to include that my car is a two door coupe. So, E92. (Why "E"? Why "92"?)

Thanks also for the other responses. I haven't yet received The Roundel, but hope it will arrive soon

It's my understanding that the "E" body code is the internal BMW engineering project code for the BMW car lines, and are assigned sequentially at the beginning of each project. The generations of 3 Series cars have been E21, E30, E36, E46, E90 (91,92,93), and F30. When they ran out of "E" plus a two digit number, they started on the "F"s a few years ago. They also expanded the nomenclature to differentiate each body style (sedan, wagon, coupe, convertible in the case of the E9X series - which has become the way to express the entire generation in one word.)

At some point, this coding system became popular to the public. I'm amazed at how many people are familiar with the system and use it to describe the cars.

As the owner of an E30, E46, E90, and F25 - I hope this helps. (...and I hope I have the story right.)

E = Entwicklung (german) = evolution or development in English

Larry is right, each specific project was designated with an E code and now since the E's are all used up they are on to F. F has no meaning other than it comes next in the alphabet.

If you look at the codes you'll see big gaps. Asssume all of those gaps are cars/designs/projects that never saw production.

Also, if you notice in my sig below there is a Mini listed. Mini uses the "R" designation for their models.

Welcome to the addiction - Have fun with the new ride.

I'm on my second one after 2 years with the E30, recently got an E36.
Re did,the interior and now bringing the maintenance up to date.

I have the same exact ride except mine is Jet Black and Coral Red. The car is great except for the way it handles (relative to a non xi BMW), but that's being rectified at the end of the month
