Replacing fluid in lifetime fill differential

Post by letterman »

What is the best pump to use to get the old fluid out of a differential without a drain plug? I am asking from both an access and effectiveness (want to get all the metal shavings out) perspective. Thanks in advance for any advice. I noticed that we didn't have anything that would fit the bill in the Club toolbox.

I use a fluid transfer pump when I can't undo the drain plug on a diff or trans which is, at that point, basically the same predictament you find yourself in. I got mine at Autozone for @ $20

It *may* not get all fluid and shavings out, but at least you can change the vast majority of it

How to get the debris out

Post by letterman »

I am guessing then that I should mix the fluid up pretty well so the debris isn't all sitting on the bottom when I suck out the fluid. Does that make sense?

Yup - take the car for a 15-20 minute ride to warm the diff fluid and mix it up good prior to changing. Standard practice when changing manual trans and diff fluid.
