How to check true mileage - '85 528E

Post by Al323i »

What is the best indicator of the true mileage on an older car? I found an '85 528E on CL stating that the car has 127K miles, but the picture of the driver seat looks pretty ragged. Other than the reviewing the maintenance logs, is there a 'tell tale' way of indicating a car's true mileage? Here's the link: http://jerseyshore.craigslist.org/cto/2830617948.html

Thanks,
Al

Looks like the seats are not leather, that material dry rots, that would explain the tears. I would also look at the steering wheel for wear, shift knob, brake a clutch rubbers. Check the spare, ask for any receipts, look for mileage documentation, car fax etc.. R 8)

Thanks. I don't want to go too deep into the history as it's only a $1,500 car, but I know from experience that sometimes it pays to pay more up front for a project car.

Beware of "cash only" deals. Not just that you have no recourse after the sale. Many Craig's list postings are scams. When you get there you might find yourself mugged for the money. Take a couple of beefy guys with you.

I decided not to check this E28 out. There were too many 'fishy' things that the seller mentioned to me as I was asking about the condition of the car.

I'll just keep on looking for another low cost five speed 5 series.
