+1

Still, the 1M Coupe looks really interesting. I would love to drive one on the track, or have a student with one. Looks like it would be a riot out there.

1 Series M

Post by RealM3E30 »

Just got this off Jalopnik. R 8)

BMW 1 Series M Rounds Nürburgring Slower than Audi TT-RS
You're wondering how fast the new BMW 1 Series M can get around Germany's Nürburgring, right? BMW isn't talking, but some who've witnessed a timed run have an answer. And it's good news for Audi. Read on.

According to several witnesses to a BMW Nürburgring test run, including 1Addicts' Steved, the new 1 Series M coupe turned the hellish green one in 8:12. Among BMW models, such a time places the newest M smack between the E63 M6 at 8:09 and the E60 M5 at 8:13, and dead equal with the Z4 M Coupe. In context of other automakers, it's between the Audi TT-RS at 8:09 and Aston Martin V8 Vantage at 8:13. Looks like the tiniest M is also one second slower than the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IX.

Pretty jaunty, sis. Were you were expecting a lap time rivaling, say, the E92 M3 (8:05) or BMW M3 GTS (7:48)? Not quite.

As per the details BMW revealed last week, the 1 Series M moves by way of the company's N54-spec twin-turbo, direct-injected 3.0-liter inline six tuned to 335 hp and 332 lb/ft at 1,500 rpm — with up to 369-lb-ft available once in a while via overboost. That M button on the dash? It only adjusts throttle response, not available power. BMW says it can get from 0-60 in 4.7 seconds.

1 Series M Coupe

Some more information. R 8)

Product Planning & Strategy Bulletin
Start of Communication of the 1 Series M Coupe
December 15, 2010
In order to attract customers seeking a small, light performance model, BMW requested that M develop an all-new vehicle reminiscent of the original E30 M3. The new 1 Series M Coupe serves customers seeking a modern version of a fast, lightweight sports car that enhances driver involvement and maximizes fun both on and off the race track. The limited standard / optional features have been developed to save weight and cost for those looking for the perfect car for everyday commuting and occasional track use.
The BMW 1 Series M Coupe will make its world debut at the Detroit Auto Show next month where its base price will be announced. This limited-production car will start production in March and launch by late Spring 2011.
Performance
The 1 Series M Coupe is equipped with an M-tuned N54 engine, producing 335 horsepower with 332 lb-ft of torque. Temporary overboost allows up to 369 lb-ft. The standard manual transmission launches the vehicle from 0-60 mph in 4.7 seconds. The standard 6-speed manual transmission is the only gearbox offered on this model.
The 1 Series M Coupe is largely equipped with components from the M3 Competition Package, including wheels, tires, brakes, aluminum-intensive suspension, and M variable differential lock.
Dimensions and Design
The new fenders and rear quarter panels are wider to house the enlarged vehicle footprint. Compared to the BMW 135i, the 1 Series M Coupe is 0.2 inches longer, 2.1 inches wider, 0.5 inches taller, and uses the same 104.7 inch wheelbase. It features a track 2.8 inches wider up front and 1.8 inches wider at rear, and weighs approximately 77 lbs less. The front of the 1 Series M Coupe features BMW’s new Air Curtain that reduces drag around the front wheels and is an innovation first seen on the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics concept car.
Features
The 1 Series M Coupe features an M cockpit comprised of black Boston Leather sport seats with contrasting orange stitching. Anthracite Alcantara material covers the doors, instrument binnacle, dashboard strip, and lower console boots (e-brake and shifter), also with orange contrasting stitching. The dark-themed materials perfectly fit the M tradition of providing the driver with a low-glare, all-business cockpit. Rounding out the interior are a new M instrument cluster, M steering wheel, driver footrest, entry sills, and shifter knob. This is the only interior available for the car.

Only three exterior colors will be offered: Valencia Orange Metallic (launch color), Black Sapphire Metallic, and Alpine White. The 1 Series M Coupe features standard Xenon Adaptive headlights, hi-fi sound system, and automatic climate control, among other standard equipment. A Convenience Package and Premium Package will be offered. Heated seats will be available as an option, but a moonroof will not be offered.
The 1 Series M Coupe will be beginning with March 2011 production. Ordering Guides will be posted on CenterNet and the Order Bank will be open as of December 20th.
