NJ MV Inspection
NJ MV Inspection
Hi All,
I took my E30 up to Bakers Basin MV inspection facility today to find out that even that they now only check emissions, they no longer provide a copy of the emissions report and would not even tell me any of the percentages. I guess the inspector thought that I should have been happy enough that I passed. javascript:emoticon(':D')

Actually, I'd like to talk about this a little bit. I have the airbag light on in my car. It's probably something stupid like the belt retractor or passenger seat sensor. Will this cause me to fail inspection, or am I gonna be OK? I know this was an automatic fail before, but what about now?
Never mind the stupid CEL.

it will definitely pass Colin. I took my wife's touring yesterday and the guy told me it's been a disaster so far and Crissy's "wagon" was only the 2nd or 3rd car that would've passed (out of 10) in his estimation but since it is only emissions they all passed. He said be very careful on the roads now and gave me an example of the car in front of mine which he said had NO BRAKES

I like this change. The NJ inspections were ridiculous. We have a lot of family in a state (Alabama) with NO inspections and there are more crap cars on the road in NJ than down there. No kidding. The inspections were a waste of our tax money and a waste of time. Finally someone is doing something about a lot of the nonsense in this state. Sorry for the rant, just my $0.02.

Sadly the lack of testing can only increase the number of crap can cars in NJ.jnscaldwell wrote:I like this change. The NJ inspections were ridiculous. Colin - Any issues with the Airbag light being lit at inspection? My '96 318ti has had the light on since....1996 (despite about a dozen trips to various dealers I can't even remember).
Is it basically 96+ (OBDII+) just get their codes read, while pre-96 go on the rolling dyno?

OBDII vehicles [generally 96>] get the computer scan, while pre-OBDII are supposed to get a two-speed, unloaded [no-dyno] tailpipe-emissions test for HC and CO only.
My information is that the private-facility licensing has changed such that shops can be licensed to perform pre-OBDII inspections, OBDII inspections, or both. So some shops may not have the approved emissions analyzer required for the pre-OBDII test. I know of two such shops.

I just got my car inspected on Monday. One of my headlights is out, my brake light switch is dead and I have tinted windows.
I passed.
Granted, I removed my front tints but my windows were down and they never raised them to check!
They just read the OBDII module and tested the gas cap for pressure (out of all things?!?!?)
Me likey.
